Dykema, a leading national law firm, today announced the addition of Michael D. Bernard to its Business Litigation practice group as a member in the firm’s San Antonio office. Bernard joins Dykema after practicing in the San Antonio office of Bracewell LLP. Prior to that, Bernard served as City Attorney to the City of San Antonio from 2005-2013, which includes time serving under former Mayor and current Dykema senior counsel Phil Hardberger.

With the addition of Bernard, Dykema’s San Antonio office has added six attorneys in the past several months, including IP veteran Van Lindberg and Government Contracts attorneys John Dulske and Bryan Kost.

Bernard’s practice focuses on commercial and labor litigation, and public law. During his 30-year career—which has encompassed all aspects of state and federal litigation, including civil and criminal trials, arbitration and other forms of alternate dispute resolution—he has represented governmental entities, private and public corporations, financial institutions, and high net-worth individuals facing litigation challenges. Bernard’s clients have spanned a broad range of industries, including government, sports teams and individuals, businesses, organized religions, manufacturing and business leaders.

During his time as City Attorney for the City of San Antonio, Bernard served as the chief legal advisor to city council, city management and all city departments. His office included a team of 58 attorneys that provided complete legal services to the city, providing advice and general counsel on all legal issues and litigation involving a city of more than 1 million residents. He also previously worked as the First Assistant in the District Attorney’s office.

“I’ve known Michael since law school and I’m absolutely thrilled he is joining our team,” said Dan Harkins, Managing Member of Dykema’s San Antonio office. “His vast experience handling high-profile matters in all variety of litigation will greatly benefit the firm and our clients.”

Bernard earned a J.D. from St. Mary's University School of Law, an M.A. from American University, and a B.A. from The University of Texas at San Antonio.
