Sofía has over 15 years of experience in the legal field, she has specialized her professional career in Public Law, Public Procurement & Regulation, Real Estate & Hospitality, and Telecommunications, Media & Technology practices. Within the Public Law, Public Procurement & Regulation practice, she counsels public and private companies, international and domestic, whether as regulated companies, State contractors or regulatory agencies in multiple industries on complex matters pertaining Administrative, Regulatory and Constitutional Law, associated with corporate transactions, procurement (from public biddings to performance of public contracts), administrative proceedings and contentious-administrative judicial procedures. Regarding the Telecommunications, Media & Technology practice, she advises telecoms operators, service providers in a wide array of day-to-day issues, and strategic improvement of regulations, and has advised public companies and regulatory agencies in issues of regulatory policy and reform. As to the Real Estate & Hospitality practice, Sofía counsels and represents international and domestic companies and investment funds on sophisticated corporate and real estate transactions, from due diligence to structuring and closing, including project finance, joint ventures, shareholders agreements, leasing, purchase and sale, of industrial, commercial, hospitality and residential projects. Sofía joined the BLP team in 2018 as Special Counsel. She was previously a Partner at & Business Advice in Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, an Associate at Batalla Abogados in Costa Rica and an Associate at Mayer Brown LLP in Chicago. Likewise, she has been an Assistant Professor at Universidad de Costa Rica and an Instructor at Harvard Law School. She graduated in Law with honors from Universidad de Costa Rica in 2003 and then completed a Master of Laws (LL.M.) Degree in Regulatory Law from Harvard Law School in 2007. She is highly recognized for her many publications in her career areas and for her participation in multiple committees of UCCAEP, AmCham, and MIDEPLAN. She has also been a panelist at many congresses worldwide and is a founding member of the Ibero-American Economic Regulation Association in Costa Rica and of the Harvard – MIT Club in Costa Rica. She currently lives in San José, Costa Rica, with her husband, son and daughter.
