Profile
David Gutierrez is a Founding Partner of BLP, one of the largest and most recommended law firms in Central America, where he specializes on matters dealing with corporate and commercial law, project finance and infrastructure, and arbitration. He has led many of the most important transactions in the region, including financings for more than US$2 billion, M&A deals and arbitration cases. He is currently Resident Partner of BLP rep office in Madrid, Spain.
Before BLP, he was a Partner with KPMG, a foreign lawyer at Washington D.C. international law firm Wilmer, Hale & Door, where he worked on M&A transactions and energy projects in the Latin American region. He was an advisor to the Presidency of Costa Rica in matters dealing with state reform, expropriations and arbitration.
He graduated from the University of Costa Rica Law School and Georgetown University Law Center, with honors. He is a Fulbright and an Organization of American States scholar.
David is a member of the chapters of Madrid and Costa Rica of YPO (Young Presidents Organization), the most exclusive business organization in the world. In addition, he is a member of the CEAPI (Business Council Alliance for Latin America), based in Madrid, Spain.
Presently, he serves as President of the Board of Directors of Fundacion CRUSA, one of the most influential and a leader non-for profit organization with almost US$80MM in endowment.
He also serves as Co-Chair of the Latin American Regional Forum of the International Bar Association, the largest organization of lawyers in the world.
He is a Fellow of the Central America Leadership Initiative (CALI), a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network of the Aspen Institute.
In prior positions, David was a founding member and former President of CICA, the arbitration center of AMCHAM; as well as of the Costa Rican Association of International Law (ACODI). He served as the first President of the"BLP Pro Bono Foundation", the first Costa Rican signatory of the "Pro Bono Declaration of the Americas" and also headed the first-ever Pro Bono Committee of the Costa Rican Bar Association. He was also a member of the Advisory Council of the Americas Society and Council of the Americas. From 2011 until 2017 he served on the Board of Directors of the Asociacion de Empresarios para el Desarrollo (United Way in Costa Rica). As a soccer fan, he also served for 6 years as the Comptroller of Deportivo Saprissa the largest, most successful and most popular soccer team in Central America, and he was also a member of the board of directors of the Costa Rican Soccer Federation from 2015-2016.
He was awarded "Central American Law Firm Leader" by the prestigious Law Business Research, publisher of Latin Lawyer. Furthermore, he has been recognized as one of the top lawyers in Costa Rica and Central America, by prestigious local, regional and international publications.
