David has practiced law for two decades during which time he has mastered a number of areas of expertise. His current focus is on Business Law, and Human Rights, Business & Sustainability. For many consecutive years, prestigious publications such as The Legal 500, Chambers & Partners, Latin Lawyer, Who’s Who Legal and the IFLR 1000 have recognized him as a “bold attorney with great vision for transactions.” In 2005, Latin Lawyer selected him as one of the top 40 corporate lawyers under age 40 in Central America. In Business Law, he not only provides legal advice to multinational companies on day-to-day affairs, but he also counsels on transactional matters such as mergers and acquisitions. After graduating with honors from the Universidad de Costa Rica in 1994, David was named a Fulbright Scholar with a Fellowship to Georgetown University where he earned an LLM degree with honors. He then went on to serve for five years as an Associate and Partner at KPMG. In 2003, David joined his friend and colleague Luis Castro in a crucial decision to regenerate the practice of law. In order to offer the best legal counsel possible, David and Luis saw a need to identify themselves as partners to their clients. At that moment, the two young lawyers created a fresh paradigm: Business Law Partners was born. A burning desire to seek the best business as well as legal solutions from the client’s perspective has fueled the firm’s unprecedented growth. From a handful of lawyers and staff at the outset to almost 300 employees in 2018, BLP has become the dominant law firm in Central America. As a result of his efforts, David has been honored with a number of Titles and Memberships including President of the Board of Directors of the CRUSA Foundation, ex-auditor of the Business Association for Development (AED), honorary founding member of the Omar Dengo Foundation, Vice-president of the Board of the Latin-American Forum of the International Bar Association (IBA), fellow of the Aspen Institute’s Central American Leadership Initiative (CALI), a founding member of the Pro Bono Commission of the Bar Association of Costa Rica, and founding member and former chairman of the Costa Rican International Law Association (ACODI). In addition, he is a co-founder of the BLP Foundation, serving as chairman since 2008. David is based in Madrid where he cultivates relationships.
