Eric counsels employers in a wide variety of employee benefit and executive compensation matters, with particular focus on retirement plans, executive compensation, deferred compensation, and fiduciary compliance.

Although he maintains a diverse practice in employee benefits and executive compensation, Eric has deep experience in handling issues that affect tax-exempt employers, employers in the health care industry, and employers in higher education. Eric works extensively with boards of directors and compensation committees in the establishment of compensation programs, compliance with the IRS “intermediate sanctions” rules, and the development of sound corporate governance and fiduciary compliance policies and practices. He enjoys helping executives and board members of hospitals, universities and other exempt entities meet the challenges of governing their organizations’ benefit plan and executive compensation arrangements.

Eric also maintains an active corporate practice in the health care industry, serving as general counsel to private medical groups and advising medical practices on contracting, physician compensation and medical group integration transactions.

Eric has served in leadership positions on a number of non-profit boards in Portland. He is particularly proud of his work on the restoration of Portland Observatory (1807), which achieved National Historic Landmark status. Eric recently served as President of Portland Public Library.

Eric is Vice Chair of the Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation Group. He currently serves on the firm’s Hiring Committee, is a former chair of the firm’s Marketing Committee, and a former member of the firm's Executive Board. He also edits and is a regular contributor to the Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation Group blog: www.employeebenefitsupdate.com.

Eric enjoys outdoor activities, including boating, cycling and cross-country skiing.
