Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed several bills into law that will impact employers as early as Jan. 1, 2024. As 2023 draws to a close, employers should familiarize themselves with these new laws to ensure timely compliance. Some of the key changes impacting employers are discussed below.

SB 553: Workplace Violence Prevention Plan, Training and Recordkeeping

One of the most impactful pieces of legislation is SB 553, which consists of the first general industry workplace violence prevention requirement in the United States. This law requires nearly all California employers to establish, by July 1, 2024, a workplace violence prevention plan, train employees on workplace violence, and maintain a violent incident log.
