In which office are you located?
Houston, Texas
Tell us a little about your practice.
As an associate in the construction litigation practice group, I primarily handle commercial and residential construction disputes. The issues in my cases generally involve construction defects, contracts, lien foreclosures, negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, insurance defense, and DTPA matters. There are many challenges that approach my desk every day, but the sense of reward in coming up with strategic solutions to assist each client makes it all worth it.
Why did you want to become an attorney?
I was blessed to have an attorney as a father. Growing up, he would share his experiences and sense of purpose in advocating for his clients. He is still practicing and makes a positive impact every day doing what he loves. This, along with the uncontroverted fact that I defeated him in every argument ever, inspired me to become a lawyer. I told myself one day: If that guy can do it, surely I can too!
What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
Hispanic Heritage Month, to me, is all about pausing to appreciate my ancestors that came before me. Those who made it all happen, so that I could prosper. As an example, my grandparents did not receive higher education. Not even high school education. They each worked multiple low-income jobs just to put food on the table for their large families. Despite this, they encouraged their children (including my parents) to pursue education—something they never had the opportunity to do. As a result, my parents were part of the first generation in their families to become college graduates.
This serves as a reminder to appreciate the incredible opportunity I have been given—to appreciate that I am able to do something my ancestors never would have dreamed of, while recognizing that this could not have happened without their sacrifices.
How do you celebrate?
I celebrate by spending time with my family. Even though they live in Dallas, the 3.5 hour drive does not stop us from seeing each other. The month of September also means that we can get together to watch the Dallas Cowboys play football—America’s Team.
