Collaboration with Amnesty International Norway
by Simonsen Vogt Wiig
Sustainability and social responsibility are among Simonsen Vogt Wiig’s strategic priorities, and we are highly committed to contributing beyond our own sphere as well as running our business in a sustainable way.
In connection with the firm’s internal work with sustainability, goal 16 «Peace, justice and strong institutions» was identified as one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals to which we want to pay a particular focus.
– As a steady supporter to Amnesty for a number of years, it was natural for us to reach for a wider collaboration, hoping to do good of our core competence for the benefit of Amnesty’s important work, says Managing partner Mona Søyland.
As part of the agreement, Simonsen Vogt Wiig’s dedicated specialists will prepare two memorandums connected to artificial intelligence and the EU Commission’s proposed AI Act. The first project, which started already this summer, addresses the use of biometric remote identification by public authorities, specifically focusing on the legal framework in Norway for the police’s use of facial recognition. The second report, estimated to begin in January 2024, will focus on the use of artificial intelligence as a tool for public authorities’ decision-making.
– Our investigation has already brought out some interesting findings. The work is very rewarding also at an academic level, and we look forward to dig deeper, says Camilla Hagelien, project lead and TMT-lawyer at Simonsen Vogt Wiig.
