April, 2020 - Germany

As of April 1, 2020, Marcel Hostettler has joined Heuking’s Zurich office as a new Partner. Marcel Hostettler comes to the law firm from MME. He is accompanied by Associate Eric Baumgartner (Capital Markets and Tax). Dr. Anna Wehrmüller (Regulatory and Compliance) and Dr. Peter Märkl (Banking and Finance) will join the team on May 1, 2020. The entire team has proven experience in advising technology-driven clients, particularly in the capital markets sector and will continue to expand this sector under Hostettler’s leadership both on the Zurich financial market and across borders.

Baumgartner comes from the law firm Lexcellence, Wehrmüller, like Hostettler, comes from MME and previously worked for FINMA (the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority), Märkl comes from UBS and held several senior positions there.

Marcel Hostettler (43) advises companies in banking and capital markets law, in particular on products and issues related to blockchain and distributed ledger technology. His clients include in particular the Swiss Stock Exchange. Hostettler was Partner at Swiss law firm MME. Previously, he held a key position at FINMA and subsequently worked as a regulatory specialist for UBS, Switzerland’s largest bank. In addition to his broad experience in regulatory matters, he has in-depth knowledge in the areas of private equity and M&A, having led various cross-border transactions and projects. He also focuses on banking and securities dealer regulation, collective investment schemes, and on FinTech and blockchain technology.

“Adding the peers at the Swiss location will place our office in Zurich on a new, forward-looking basis,” says Dr. Andreas Urban, Managing Partner at Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek. “The new team provides us with the opportunity to gain further expertise in a new and key area of future legal advice as relates to digitalization, which we will also use on the German market,” Urban continues.

“Marcel Hostettler joining our firm will massively reinforce our already successful capital market practice. Particularly his expertise and leading position in the digitalization of the capital market and the issuing and trading of crypto tokens based on blockchain or distributed ledger technology will strengthen our position in a future-oriented market segment of the international banking and capital market. His experience extends far beyond the capital markets and will help us to expand and develop the firm’s advisory services across borders as part of the ever increasing digitalization of the economy,” adds Dr. Peter Ladwig, Co-Managing Partner at Heuking and responsible for the digitalization sector.
