UK businesses take vital steps to address ESG – Shoosmiths’ survey reveals

December, 2022 - Milton Keynes, England

UK businesses are taking vital steps to address environmental, social and governance issues (ESG) within the workplace, according to research by law firm Shoosmiths.

21 percent are implementing a reduction in business travel, 21 percent a diversity and inclusion strategy and 18 percent are reviewing their supplier credentials.

Environmentally friendly ‘green benefits’ are also being introduced by a further 18 percent.

The results come from Shoosmiths’ Future of Work survey, which saw the firm’s employment team commission research across a wide network of HR directors and managers.

Survey participants spanned the length and breadth of the country and represent organisations ranging from those with less than 100 employees to those with more than 1,000.

The objective of the poll was to gain an insight into the most pressing workplace challenges, changes, and solutions in 2022. This included ESG and the role it plays in strategic planning.

The survey also discovered that many firms are working with external agencies to reduce carbon footprint, employing a sustainability officer, and introducing key performance indicators (KPIs) linked to ESG.

Paul Stokey, who heads up Shoosmiths’ national employment team, said: “In the direct aftermath of COP27, perhaps there has never been a more crucial time to discuss ESG in the workplace.

“It is clear that businesses have started to adopt clear policies in regard to ESG issues, which are of crucial importance to not only their performance and reputation but to stakeholders and potential employees.”

The survey comes as part of Shoosmiths wide ranging Future of Work campaign, which was launched earlier this year.

The campaign has involved numerous and events and discussion around the world of work today, and included webinars, podcasts, and articles, as well networking discussions and useful resources on the future of flexible working, fostering diversity and inclusion and the green economy.
