DFDL Co-Sponsors the 2013 Davis Cup in Myanmar

April, 2013 - Yangon, Myanmar

We are pleased to announce that DFDL is co-sponsoring the 2013 Davis Cup; the most prestigious international team event in men’s tennis. The competition began in 1900 between the US and Britain, and has grown to such a level that in 2013, 130 nations are fielding teams in this knock-out tournament. Groups III and IV competitions will take place at the Thein Byu Tennis Centre in Yangon from 22 April until 5 May.

“We are quite excited to be a sponsor of the Davis Cup and see five ASEAN countries participating in the tournament,” says DFDL’s Managing Partner Martin Desautels; “This event is a turning point for tennis in Myanmar enhanced by the presence of so many of Asia’s top tennis professionals.”

Myanmar has been steadily gaining notoriety in the world of international tennis through its efforts at the grassroots level, spearheaded by the Tennis Federation of Myanmar (TFM). The TFM has been instrumental in bringing tennis to schools in both urban and rural Myanmar, and has created an organization of coaches and trainers to help foster an environment that allows for both education in, and enjoyment of, the game of tennis.

The Davis Cup is by far the largest international sporting event that has ever taken place in Myanmar. Competing in Group III are Cambodia (building on its historic debut last year), Hong Kong - China, Iran, Malaysia, Oman, Pacific Oceania, UAE, and Vietnam. Group IV consists of Bahrain, Bangladesh, Iraq, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Turkmenistan, and Yemen. “We are quite excited to be a sponsor of the Davis Cup and see five ASEAN countries participating in the tournament,” says DFDL’s Managing Partner Martin Desautels; “This event is a turning point for tennis in Myanmar enhanced by the presence of so many of Asia’s top tennis professionals.” DFDL has been working in Myanmar since 1996, and as DFDL’s success continues to grow, so does its social responsibility.

In 2012, DFDL co-sponsored the first Myanmar International Tennis Project organized by the TFM, which hosted children from 15 public and private Yangon schools to develop fundamentals and train coaches. This new sponsoring engagement along with companies such as Adecco, BNP Paribas, HP, Hugo Boss, and Wilson confirms DFDL’s continued support for the development of tennis and youth education in Myanmar as well as the commitment to Myanmar’s future and growth. Davis Cup organizers will be hosting a gala dinner for players and sponsors on 21 April. Competition will begin the next morning, following the opening ceremony at 8:00 am. Group IV matches will start on 22 April and will finish on 28 April. Group III matches will start on 1 May and will finish on 5 May. Admission for the matches is free, and tickets can be obtained through the official tournament website or at the Thein Byu Tennis Centre prior to the commencement of competition.
