Profile
Dale Hutchison is the Head of the Internal Research Unit at ENS. He specialises in providing professional support to all business areas in the firm.
He practised as an advocate at the Cape Bar in 2001. He has been a professor of private law at the University of Cape Town since 1983. Dale was awarded a University of Cape Town Distinguished Teacher Award in 1983 and the Law Students' Council's Lecturer of the Year Award. He was also awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship and the CSD Award for Senior Researchers. Within the University of Cape Town's law faculty, Dale has served as deputy dean, acting dean and head of the department of private law. He has served on numerous committees of the faculty and the university. Dale has also served on the editorial boards of two law journals, Acta Juridica and Responsa Meridiana.
Dale currently teaches general principles of contract, the law of cession and advanced contract. In the past, he has taught numerous courses at both LLM and LLB level, including comparative private law (LLM), delict, succession, trusts, misrepresentation, and economic loss, advanced law of obligations, criminal law, estoppel, jurisprudence, agency, consumer protection and Roman law. Dale is the general editor of the 8th edition of Wille's Principles of South African Law a standard textbook on South African private law. His other major work is his PhD thesis: Damages for Non-Fraudulent Misrepresentation in English and South African Law. He has also contributed chapters to academic law books, and has published numerous articles, notes and book reviews in leading law journals.
