Profile

During the decade that Bernardo has been a lawyer, he has advised local and transnational enterprises, including pharmaceutical companies, service centers, and financial institutions on day-to-day Business Law matters, while remaining active in mergers and acquisitions, contracts, and structuring transactions. Among the transactions on which he has worked are the Siemens AG regional internal restructuring process, and the termination of the Marubeni power supply agreement that preceded delivery of its geothermal plant in Miravalles, Guanacaste, to the Costa Rican Electricity Institute. In 2013 he advised a local company, Bosz Digital S.A., throughout the process of its sale to the multinational Publicis Groupe. He was also part of the team representing GDF Suez during the $800 million sale of its assets in Costa Rica and Panama in 2014. The next year, his BLP team assisted Grupo Intelectiva in the purchase of the “Kentucky Fried Chicken” franchise in Costa Rica, and Grupo Tribu in the sale of certain of its regional operations to the Havas Group. Bernardo joined BLP as an associate in 2011 after working at other law firms, and having conducted his pro bono college work in the Labor Law Department of the Office of the Attorney General. In 2007, Bernardo was awarded a law degree from the Universidad Escuela Libre de Derecho. Soon after, he earned his specialization in Notary and Registration Law from the Universidad Interamericana de Costa Rica. In 2011, he graduated from Northwestern University with an LLM degree. Bernardo is passionate about pro bono activities as shown by his involvement in several social initiatives and public policy reforms. Five years ago, he and a group of friends formed a social responsibility company named “La Esquina”, whose goal is to find job opportunities and provide comprehensive assistance to its members, including former addicts and former gang members of communities at high social risk. Under this project, Bernardo has fostered the creation of an amateur boxing group comprised in part of former gang members, one of which has already become a national champion. In addition, Bernardo has taken part in other public-private initiatives, such as Poder Ciudadano Ya! Association, an organization that intends to change the way congressional representatives are elected in Costa Rica. Bernardo is based in San José, Costa Rica.
