Profile

Having experienced nearly every stage of federal litigation as a former member of the federal judiciary or US Department of Justice, Colin handles complex issues across an array of subject areas through artful written and oral advocacy.

Prior to joining Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, Colin served the judiciary as a law clerk to the Honorable Chief Judge Rebecca Beach Smith of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia from 2017 to 2018, during her tenure as Chair of the Judicial Conference’s Committee on Codes of Conduct, and the Honorable Senior Judges of the DC Court of Appeals from 2016 to 2017. Also, during law school, Colin interned at the United States District Court for the District of Columbia for the Honorable Beryl A. Howell (currently Chief Judge) and then for the Honorable Magistrate Judge G. Michael Harvey.

After becoming familiar with federal trial practice during his judicial internships, Colin interned for the Department of Justice’s Civil Appellate Staff and Criminal Appellate Section, where he assisted with advising agencies on changes in constitutional law; drafting trial motions, appellate briefs, certiorari petitions, and memoranda to the Office of the Solicitor General; and helping United States Attorneys’ Offices develop trial strategy and preserve records. The foundation for Colin’s broad experience came from the tutelage of Harry L. Manion, III, among others, at Manion, Gaynor and Manning LLP (since acquired by the firm).

A former NCAA Division I swimmer, Colin competed in numerous national level competitions throughout his high school and undergraduate career. Colin’s competitive drive infused with studies in law and economics at William & Mary and legal philosophy at Cambridge University, Christ College, which led him to the courtroom.

Colin will bring his experience to bear as a member of the commercial litigation practice group, the competition team, and as Harry’s lead trial associate in the national trial practice.

  • Obtained “grand-slam” arbitration victory for wireless telecoms client, winning $50+ million award and defeating $19+ million in counterclaims
  • Parachuted onto trial team of dredging company one month prior to start of Boston jury trial in state court for breach of construction contract, winning entire $22 million in damages sought and defeating all counterclaims totaling $12 million
  • Parachuted onto trial team of cryptography patent owner in a complex patent infringement litigation against Adobe Inc. in the Eastern District of Virginia. After a contentious two-week trial, the jury found all four asserted patents valid and infringed, which handed Adobe its first even patent infringement loss, and awarded a seven-figure damages verdict against the infringing defendant
