Profile

Ian is a Partner in the intellectual property practice. He is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong and is a UK Chartered patent attorney and Chinese patent attorney.

With his computer science and electronic engineering background, Ian worked in the hi-tech software industry with TIBCO Finance Technology, a Silicon Valley-based company, and was a financial software consultant with Reuters before he started his career in law with Deacons.

Ian’s main practice areas are IP litigation and enforcement and commercial IP focusing on China and technology. Ian’s specialisations include software, media content protection, anti-counterfeiting, Internet-related regulations, technology transfer, IP due diligence on hi-tech M&A, technology licensing negotiation and acquisition, personal data protection and cross-border IP litigation involving China.

Ian is a frequent speaker at various events, including seminars organised by HKTDC, HKIPD, FHKI and Managing IP. He has been quoted in a number of articles by Bloomberg Law and Managing IP.

- Assisting an UK nanotech company in patent infringement before PRC court and local Intellectual Property Office against infringers in China
- Advising a Chinese private equity fund in acquisition of the RF power chip business and technologies, which valued at US$1.86 from a well-known Netherlands semi-conductor company
- Advising a well-known UK car manufacturer in a landmark design invalidation matter in China
- Advising various technology start-ups on IP protection and commercial IP strategy in Hong Kong and China
