Profile

James is counsel in the dispute resolution and litigation team in the Cayman Islands. He advises on all aspects of cross-border insolvency and contentious commercial matters, with a particular focus on financial services, investment funds and shareholder disputes. His practice ordinarily involves complex, high value litigation.

He has particular recent experience of shareholder 'fair value' appraisal petitions issued under Section 238 of the Cayman Islands Companies Act, having acted company-side in In re Qunar Cayman Islands Ltd, In re Qihoo 360 Technology Ltd, In re JA Solar Holdings Co Ltd and In re Xiaodu Life Technology Limited.

James is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Cayman Islands Recovery and Insolvency Specialists Association. He has written several articles featuring in International Corporate Rescue, INSOL International's Touchpoint, the Hedge Fund Law Report and Lexology, amongst other publications. 

James is a Fellow of INSOL International.

Professional Career

Significant Accomplishments

Prior to moving to Carey Olsen in 2022, James worked for four years at another leading Cayman Islands law firm. Before that, he worked in the financial markets disputes practice of Dentons in London, where he predominantly acted for financial institutions in relation to derivatives mis-selling claims and claims concerning the alleged manipulation of the London Interbank Offered Rate, amongst other financial disputes.

James has extensive in-house client experience, having spent time on secondment with Deutsche Bank, RBS, Balfour Beatty and Barclays.

James qualified as a solicitor of England and Wales in 2013 and as an attorney in the Cayman Islands in 2018. He graduated from the University of Oxford (St Edmund Hall) in 2006.
