John specialises in advising individuals and corporates through the challenges of criminal and regulatory investigations from beginning to end. John joined Shoosmiths in 2019 from Hodge Jones and Allen where he was head of financial crime and regulatory investigations.

He has extensive experience of advising on complex cases brought or contemplated by agencies such as the Serious Fraud Office, National Crime Agency, Financial Conduct Authority, Crown Prosecution Service and HMRC.

John is regularly instructed in matters relating to fraud, bribery & corruption, proceeds of crime and financial services related investigations such as breaches of FSMA.

John has also recently advised on alleged breaches of EU Economic Sanctions.

Additionally John is well placed to provide pre-action advice and assistance on regulatory and compliance issues including anti-bribery policies, business bribery risk assessment & staff training.

Due to the nature of John's practice he also has a significant understanding of ancillary or parallel investigations & requirements such as:

  • Disclosure obligations (ie Section 2 Notices);
  • Compelled interviews;
  • Director’s Disqualification proceedings;
  • Regulatory & Disciplinary investigations of professional bodies;
  • Civil Recovery;
  • Account Freezing & Forfeiture Orders;

John is an active committee member of the Proceeds of Crime Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the IBA (Business Crime Division), Fraud Lawyers Association, European Criminal Bar Association, LCCSA and the London Fraud Forum.
