José Miguel Álvarez, founding Partner of BLP in Honduras, stands out in Business Law, Mergers & Acquisitions, Banking & Finance, Competition & Antitrust, and Energy & Infrastructure. He leads financing for infrastructure projects and advises transnational companies on commercial activities in Honduras. Professional Career

Significant Accomplishments
Avianca financial restructuring process. BLP advised Latin American airline Avianca during the restructuring process to obtain short-term financing and eliminate more than $1billion in liabilities. In October 2021, the airline received court approval for its restructuring plan in New York. The financing plan was recognized as Deal of the Year by Latin Finance and Latin Lawyer.
First acquisition of Jefferson Capital to enter the Central American territory and expand its presence in Latin America. BLP advised Jefferson in Central America, including due diligence in antitrust matters and negotiation of deal agreements.
Grupo Unicomer on a syndicated loan for US$350 million. BLP advised Grupo Unicomer on a $350 million loan from a banking syndicate in which several subsidiaries of Unicomer in LATAM and the Caribbean have acted as guarantors.
Moody’s entry into Central America. Lead counsel on advising Moody’s in the acquisition of SC Riesgo’s operations in Central America, involving all related aspects of the transaction. 
Global distributor of life science ingredients acquires DIVSA in Central America. BLP advised Barentz International on the acquisition of 100% of the shares of Distribuciones Industriales Variadas, S.A. (Divsa) in a significant transaction involving eight jurisdictions.
AkzoNobel completes Grupo Orbis acquisition. BLP advised the seller, Grupo Orbis (Pintuco), on this regionally impactful transaction, employing attorneys from our offices in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, coordinating with lawyers in Panama, and conducting due diligence in the jurisdictions of Central America.
Sale of shares of Banco Popular, S.A. in Honduras. Banco Popular S.A. is the dominant commercial banker of microcredits in Honduras. IFC, BCIE and Bamboo Capital Partners sold their shareholdings of Banco Popular to Triple Jump via ASN Microkredietfonds, Incofin, BIO Invest, and FMO. BLP advised sellers and buyers on the necessary regulatory approval for the sale of shares of an institution supervised by the National Banking and Insurance Commission, as well as carried out the required economic concentration notification of the transaction’s impact.
BLP advised EMASAL on the corporate process to increase its share capital, including advice and preparation of the corporate documents necessary to obtain registration in the capital increase of EMASAL.
Advised Scatec Solar and Norfund concerning a US$ 250 million project financing for the construction, development, and operation of PV power plants.
Advised Globeleq Mesoamerica Energy regarding a US$ 300 million financing for the construction, development, and operation of a wind farm.
