Present, partner in charge of Garrigues in China. Torres’ main focus of practice is cross-border counseling; advising foreign investors on doing business in China, including the structuring and reorganization of foreign investment enterprises. He also manages other direct investments and M&A affairs involving SOE (State Owned Enterprises) as well as private enterprises and general commercial transactions in China. Torres also advises in various complex commercial disputes involving both Chinese and foreign parties, emphasizing on cost-effective resolution of commercial disputes considering the client’s overall business objectives. As a member of a foreign law firm, he is not permitted to directly represent clients in Chinese courts; his role is to advise clients on the most effective strategy for and in management of the dispute resolution process. Prior to his appointment as a partner to China, he was responsible of the Maritime and Transportation Department of Garrigues. Currently, he continues to collaborate on matters related to maritime law and transportation; logistics and port operations, maritime insurance; construction and financing of vessels as well as maritime arbitration. Member of the Asia Pacific desk and International Service line since its foundation. Invited lecturer of FDI, M&A in China at ICEX, China-EuropeanLawSchool, different Chambers of Commerce established all around China and professor of Master Degree in Legal Counseling for Businesses at Business Scholl Caixanova in Vigo. Manuel has been invited by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, in cooperation with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Wolters Kluwer, to render a training about foreign investments in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. Torres is ranked in the Chambers & Partners Asia Pacific Guide and Legal 500 rankings in corporate and M&A areas, highlighted in the 2018 edition due to its deep knowledge of the Chinese commercial legal framework and business culture.
