Profile

Matt’s practice focuses on all areas of federal income tax law, with particular emphasis on tax controversy and energy tax issues.

Matt’s practice centers primarily on tax litigation and various transactions involving section 45 production tax credits, section 48 investment tax credits, the Section 1603 Treasury Grant Program, and other renewable energy incentives.

He represents individual and organizational clients in administrative and judicial tax controversy proceedings for federal income tax issues; developers and investors in various types of energy and renewable energy projects, including those that qualify for tax credits for the production of electricity from wind, solar, and other qualifying renewable resources; and pro bono clients in individual tax matters such as innocent spouse relief. Matt previously served as an attorney-advisor to the Hon. Elizabeth Crewson Paris of the US Tax Court. He is admitted to practice in the US Tax Court and the US Court of Federal Claims.

Relevant Experience

  • Represented a client in administrative proceedings with the IRS involving tax issues related to conservation easements.
  • Advised an organizational client in administrative proceedings with the IRS involving tax issues related to the historic tax credit.
  • Advised an organizational client in tax litigation related to the Section 1603 Treasury Grant Program.
  • Advised clients in matters relating to section 183 “hobby loss” activities and section 469 passive activity rules.
  • Advised clients in matters relating to US Tax Court practice and procedure.
