Michael Psaila graduated Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta in 2004 after submitting a doctoral thesis titled "The Raising and Maintenance of Capital" . He furthered his studies at Kings College London, where he obtained a Masters of Law degree in Corporate and Commercial Law.

Michael was called to the Bar in January, 2005 and was a partner at Simon Tortell & Associates since the firm was founded in May 2009 until it merged with Mamo TCV in July 2016.

Michael's main areas of practice include banking and finance, capital markets, corporate and insolvency law.

He is a member of the Chamber of Advocates, the Institute of Financial Services Practitioners and the International Bar Association and is also recommended in most major legal directories.

Professional Career

Significant Accomplishments

  • Maltese counsel in respect of a notes issue by the (English) parent company of certain Maltese companies (including one licensed and regulated entity) as well as a revolving credit facility taken by the issuer and the security package being granted by the Maltese companies to secure the obligations in question;
  • Counsel advising on the Maltese law aspects of an initial public offering of a company set up using a Maltese corporate holding structure on the Toronto Stock Exchange;
  • Maltese counsel in respect the sale of a 38% holding in a credit institution listed on the Malta Stock Exchange;
  • External counsel to a retail bank on a variety of matters including regulatory compliance, anti-money laundering, product structuring, credit facilities, security agreements and other day-to-day matters; and
  • Maltese counsel to the acquirer of a company specialising in technically complex active pharmaceutical ingredients with an operation in Malta.
