Profile
Ryan is a partner in the construction and engineering team at Shoosmiths.
He specialises in drafting and negotiating construction and engineering contracts based on industry standard forms such as FIDIC, ICC, IChemE, JCT, MF/1, NEC3/4 and PPC2000 and bespoke forms including EPC, EPCM (offshore and onshore) and FEED contracts, as well as framework agreements, pre-construction services agreements, development management agreements, professional appointments, security, other ancillary construction and engineering documents and the construction aspects of development agreements, development funding agreements, agreements for lease and adoption agreements.
Ryan's expertise includes providing construction procurement and project and transaction advice to developer, contractor, sub-contractor, consultant, landlord, tenant, operator, investor and funder clients across a broad range of sectors including office, logistics, hospitality, data centre, living (including prime residential, BTR/PRS and PBSA), retail, mixed use, life sciences, utilities, energy and infrastructure.
His recent project experience includes advising:
- a developer of a £120m 11-storey mixed-use scheme in Birmingham consisting of 456 residential units and 5,500 sq ft of ground floor commercial space;
- a developer of a block of 160 residential units in Birmingham;
- a developer of a of 12,000 sq ft development of commercial and retail space, as well as 111 apartments arranged over 1 to 8 storeys, in Bermondsey, London;
- a developer of a residential development in Bristol which will comprise 140 new homes including 96 apartments and 44 houses;
- a fund manager in their head office relocation to a new landmark office building in central London;
- a leading data centre owner, operator and developer on various sets of works at their data centre in the UK and continental Europe;
- a national retailer on the supply and installation of roof and ground mounted solar photovoltaic generating panels at its various office, warehouse and retail locations across the UK;
- a JV utilities developer and operator on the procurement and construction of the district heating infrastructure for a large residential scheme comprising 2,500 new homes in the south west of England;
- a utilities operator on the construction aspects of its adoption and operation of the district heat network serving three phases of a £600m residential development in east London;
- an operator on the construction aspects of its adoption and operation of the utilities infrastructure for Google’s new £1bn London headquarters in King’s Cross; and
- a sub-contractor in its tender negotiations for multiple sub-contract packages on Phase One of HS2.
Ryan is also a member of:
- the City of London Law Society and its Construction Law Committee, which acts as a forum for construction lawyers working in the City of London to meet and consider topical areas of law relating to the construction industry;
- the Society of Construction Law; and
- Shoosmiths’ Balance Committee, whose purpose is to champion gender equality and promote balanced representation of women at all levels at Shoosmiths and in the wider legal sector and beyond.
Prior to joining Shoosmiths, Ryan was the head of construction and engineering at Travers Smith.
