Shadmeenee Mootien is a Senior Associate at ENS in Mauritius

Shadmeenee specialises in civil litigation. Her experience includes appearing before several jurisdictions and tribunals of Mauritius. In her career, she has dealt with family law, employment law, environment and land use appeal tribunal cases, commercial law, landlord and tenant, road accidents, land law, contract law, intellectual property law (fixtures for horse racing), letters of credits, freezing orders, injunctions, seizing orders, mareva injunctions amongst other civil cases. She has also advised the local district and municipal councils and have appeared on their behalf in court. She acted for the District Council of Savanne, for the District Council of Grand Port and for the Municipal Council of Beau-Bassin Rose Hill.

In addition, Shadmeenee has also handled several criminal cases before the respective divisions and before the Court of Assizes. She has appeared before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council where she was leading Counsel.

Shadmeenee has been appointed as Vice-Chairperson of the Appeal Committee of the Gambling Regulatory Authority set up under section 7(1)(ga) and 164 of the Gambling Regulatory Authority Act since 2021. The appeal committee hears appeals from the Horse Racing Division which is set up under the Gambling Regulatory Authority.

Shadmeenee also sits as an independent observer on an association known as the Building Materials Manufacturers Association since May 2020. It is an association that regroups companies in the construction industry. The association sits to improve the construction industry in Mauritius and requires a Counsel to be present during meetings to be in line with the Competition Commission Act.

Shadmeenee is a board member of the Electoral Supervisory Commission and Electoral Boundary Commission since 2021. She is also a Board Member of the Commission on the Prerogative of Mercy since 2018, a commission set up under the Constitution to give advice to the President of Mauritius for the grant of a free pardon, respite or reduction in a criminal sentence.

Shadmeenee is a professional member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn and also a member of the Mauritius Bar Association.
