Steve has a wide-ranging litigation practice focusing on business torts, international law, commercial contract disputes, fraud and appellate advocacy.

Steve’s practice focuses on a wide-range of litigation capabilities. Steve has tried numerous jury and non-jury cases in both federal and state courts and has successfully represented Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies before state and federal courts. He is admitted to the bar in Virginia, and to the Third and Fourth Circuits and the US Supreme Court. Steve is also admitted to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Relevant Experience

  • Argued numerous cases as lead counsel in Supreme Court of Virginia and US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
  • Lead counsel in two international arbitrations, one involving a nuclear power plant in Slovenia (obtaining a $46.5 million Award for the Claimant for breach of an international treaty), and the other involving Argentina's alleged breach of a bilateral investment treaty with the US, both before the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes.
  • Obtained Preliminary Injunction for subsidiary of Smithfield Foods in Denver, Colorado, for misappropriation of trade secrets and breach of fiduciary duty on part of two senior executives who left company to form a competing business.
  • Lead counsel in a national class action involving FEMA housing inspections following natural disasters.
  • Lead counsel in a high-profile defamation case against one of the largest defense contractors in the United States.
  • Lead counsel for over 200 real estate developers, in a case before the Supreme Court of Virginia, in which a court struck down an ordinance downzoning the fastest-growing county in the United States.
  • Tried a two-year war crimes case in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, representing a leading Bosnian Croat politician.
  • Represented plaintiffs in numerous fraud suits involving verdicts or settlements in millions of dollars paid to the Firm's clients.
  • Tried numerous cases on behalf of electricity utility companies involving either summary judgment or defense verdicts.
  • Successfully defended medical products distributor in suit by multinational medical products manufacturer for breach of "exclusive" distributorship agreement, and asserted breach of covenants not to compete.
  • Tried securities law class action involving a bank merger, defending bank holding company and acquirer, that made new law in the US Supreme Court involving Section 14(a) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934.
  • Successfully represented radio broadcasting conglomerate sued for fraud and breach of contract in Nevada, where allegations involved asserted non-compliance with radio frequency electromagnetic radiation exposure guidelines promulgated by FCC.
