Profile

Stuart is a Partner and Joint Head of our Dispute Resolution & Litigation team in Scotland and leads the team’s Scottish commercial litigation practice.  

Stuart advises on a range of commercial disputes and has over 20 years’ experience acting for clients in corporate, contractual, insolvency, and property related disputes. Stuart has particular experience in managing disputes arising out of corporate and commercial transactions, from breach of warranty and contract claims to shareholder disputes.  

Stuart also regularly advises insolvency practitioners, companies and directors on all aspects of insolvency law. Stuart has acted on a number of high profile insolvency cases, including the leading case on the question of whether liquidators in Scotland have the power to disclaim onerous property. In January 2024, Stuart was appointed as Chair of the Edinburgh Insolvency Discussion Group.  

Stuart is also a Solicitor Advocate with rights of audience in the Court of Session and the Supreme Court and has considerable experience acting for and appearing on behalf of clients in the Court of Session, the Sheriff Court, the Land Court, and the Lands Tribunal.

Stuart is regularly asked to speak at external events and conferences on topics including insolvency and commercial litigation.  In 2018 and 2021, Stuart presented at the WS Society Commercial Dispute Resolution Conference.  In September 2024, Stuart will present the Corporate Insolvency Legal Update for the thirteenth year at the ICAS Insolvency & Restructuring Conference.  

Stuart is a Writer to the Signet (WS) and Member of the WS Society Council, and is WS Society Signet Accredited in Commercial Litigation.  

Stuart is co-Champion of the firm’s LGBT+ Staff Network (PROUD) in Scotland.
