Federal Radio and Television Law

January, 2006 -

At the end of last year, the Chamber of Deputies approved a bill to amend the Federal Radio and Television Law and this has now been turned over to the Senate for consideration. Among other amendments, the bill modifies the granting of concessions for the commercial use of radio and television channels with respect to the following matters: a) Concessions will be issued only through public bidding; b) Issuing concessions and regulating radio and television service will pass from the Department of Communications and Transportation to the Federal Telecommunications Commission (“COFETEL”), an agency of the former.
