Hong Kong's First Drive-in Cinema
In an effort to “rejuvenate the excitement of going to the movies”, The Drive-In became Hong Kong’s first drive-in cinema when its first of
4 screens opened to the public on December 6 2006. The second is tentatively to open by Christmas and the last two, by Chinese New Year 2007 . Situated in the West Kowloon Cultural District, the venture is owned by Sowell Resources Limited who also holds the lease to the site of The Drive-in. The day-to-day running of the cinema is managed by Elite Management with programming by local distributor Winnie Tsang, managing director of Golden Scene. The cinema, covering an area of 200,000 sq ft, has capacity for 100 cars and 80 fixed seats and will screen the latest first round movies. The movie screens are the largest in Hong Kong with state of the art audio equipment. Tickets are HK$100 per vehicle for one patron; HK$50 for second patron and HK$40 for each additional patron. The Drive-In had its premiere opening on 5 December 2006 with the screening of horror flick “The Grudge 2”.
