Hong Kong: Final Curtain for Cine-Art and Opening of New AMC Cinema
Another victim of the economic boom in Hong Kong is the Cine-Art Cinema which was officially closed in November 2006. The cinema was the only venue on Hong Kong Island that programmed independent, arthouse films. The only other arthouse cinema is Broadway Cinemateque in Kowloon. Due to rising property prices and a declining audience for several years, Cine-Art had no choice but to close. With the closing of one, comes the opening of another in the form of the second AMC cinema at the Pacific Place Mall. Operated by the same group who operate and manage the Palace and Broadway Circuit cinemas, the new cinema opened on 8 December 2006 with 6 screens and 600 seats, 400 less than the previous cinema under the UA chain which had 4 screens.
