Update on Process for eBusiness Visa Extension

February, 2023 - Ramandeep Singh Bhamra

The Ministry of Immigration and Population of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has issued a notice that updates the application process to extend eBusiness Visas for foreigners working for companies or engaging in business in Myanmar.

All such applications must be submitted in the name of a company that is duly incorporated and registered at the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (“DICA”) and must have the signature of the director of the registered company.

If the company status is not registered on the website of Myanmar Companies Online (“MyCO”), the application will be rejected. An extension letter on the company’s letterhead must be signed by one of the directors of the company as listed on MyCO and the letter must be attached to the application.

A stay permit, meant for foreigners in Myanmar for longer-term business reasons, must be extended 60 days before the expiration of the permit and the applicant’s passport must remain valid for at least six months. Extensions beyond the validity of the passport are not allowed. Single or Multiple Re-entry Visas can be applied for along with the stay permit extension application.

Any foreigner applying for an extension of a stay permit or an eBusiness visa must be present in the country for the entire application process, including the affixture of the relevant stickers. If the applicant leaves the country during the process, the application will be invalid.

Additionally, the applicant’s most recent entry visa must be an eVisa (Business), or eBusiness visa. Anyone who obtained an eVisa (Tourist) but changed to a business visa, will not be able to apply for an extension. Those who originally obtained an eVisa (Business) but changed to a different visa type and obtained a stay extension/re-entry visa, will also not be able to apply.

A valid Foreigner Registration Certificate (“FRC”) must be attached to the application. If the application is late or an authorized stay period is over, an overstay fine of USD 3 per day for up to 90 days will be incurred, with the fine rising to USD 5 per day after 90 days.

Visa extension application fees and overstay fines are exempted for children who are under 7 years old during the length of the extension applied for. Proof that a child will be under 7 years old must be submitted.
