Myanmar: IRD Rolls-Out E-Tax Registration Starting 23 May 2023
Prior to the ERMS, a taxpayer who is applying for a Taxpayer Identification Number (“TIN”) will have to manually submit the relevant documents to the Central Taxpayers Service Unit (“CTSU”) of the IRD. The process of securing for a TIN normally takes up to two weeks from the time of application.
With the introduction of ERMS, it is expected to make the process of securing for a TIN faster and more convenient to the taxpayer. Taxpayers will now only be required to register an account in the IRD website (https://eregistation.ird.gov.mm) and apply for a TIN using the platform. We noted that this e-registration currently applies to TIN registration and not yet to commercial tax and specific goods tax registrations.
After securing the TIN, the taxpayer will be able to use the electronic tax services such as the e-filing and e-tax payment systems.
This is a welcome development from the IRD as it makes the tax registration process more convenient and faster for the taxpayer. Further, this streamlines with the IRD’s Compliance Improvement Strategy, which is developed to improve and enhance the tax compliance among taxpayers.
