Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 series: registered email addresses
Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, all companies will be required to provide a registered email address to Companies House. The intention is that Companies House will use this address to communicate with the company for updates, notices and reminders. The email address must be ‘appropriate’, such that if the Registrar of Companies sends an email to that address it will be expected to come to the attention of a person acting on behalf of the company.
Changes in the registered email address may be notified to Companies House and companies will have a continuing duty to ensure that the email address remains ‘appropriate’ as part of the confirmation statement. Existing companies will be required to provide a registered email address when they file their next confirmation statement following implementation. The registered email addresses will not be available for public inspection.
Take steps to prepare: given that the provisions relating to registered email addresses have already been earmarked for March 2024 implementation, companies should take steps to identify which email address will be appropriate and establish procedures for ensuring that emails received into that address from the Registrar of Companies will been monitored and actioned quickly by the relevant persons within their organisation.
