Cyber Attacks are the Number One Threat to National Security

March, 2013 - Ronald W. Breaux, Emily Westridge Black, Timothy Newman

The U.S. Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, advised the Senate Intelligence Committee this week that cyber attacks are the number one threat to national security. “Increasingly, state and non-state actors are gaining and using cyber expertise,” Clapper stated in his remarks to the Committee. “These capabilities put all sectors of our country at risk, from government and private networks to critical infrastructure.” Clapper’s remarks – which were followed by a classified report – come one month after the White House issued an executive order aimed at improving the security of the nation’s critical infrastructure and amid renewed Congressional efforts to pass comprehensive cybersecurity legislation.

Given the increasing government focus on cyber risks, the private sector should carefully assess its cybersecurity measures and remediate any weaknesses. Haynes and Boone counsels clients on all aspects of data security and privacy, including how they can better protect their networks and proprietary information.
