An Interview with New Hanson Bridgett Partner, Jennifer Marie Martinez

April, 2019 - United States of America

Jennifer represents private and public employers on all manner of labor and employment issues, including defending employers in single plaintiff and class action litigation matters, as well as administrative charges, representing management in collective bargaining negotiations and grievance arbitrations, and providing advice and counseling on various questions related to employees and contractors. She also has a bit of a niche specialty in advising on employment issues in M&A transactions.

1. Why did you become a lawyer?

I'm one of those people that sort of always knew I wanted to be a lawyer, and a litigator specifically. I love the competitiveness that litigation involves generally, and the storytelling and human aspects of employment litigation specifically. There is never a dull day in my practice.

2. What made you choose Hanson Bridgett?

Everyone talks about the culture we have at the firm and how great our attorneys are as human beings. I love that about Hanson Bridgett, too. There's no one mold here for what a great attorney is or does, there's room for personalities and an appreciation for the whole person – even outside of work.

3. Besides law, what are some of your other passions?

I love live music and comedy shows, going to Raiders, A’s, and Warriors games, cooking, and I am a pretty voracious reader outside of work.

4. If you weren't practicing law, what do you see yourself doing?

Three wildly different options: first, my family is from New Mexico and we have very unique cuisine there. I also love to cook, so I have always wanted to open a New Mexican restaurant. Second, my younger sister is a stand-up comedian in New York; I think my appreciation for trial storytelling and performing comes from a subconscious desire to join her on stage. Third, I played competitive softball growing up and would love to have coached at the college level.

5. What keeps you busy outside of Hanson Bridgett?

I am an Oakland native and very proud of it. On the weekends, I like to spend time in my city, whether it’s enjoying a walk around Lake Merritt with my dog, having a meal with friends at a new restaurant, catching a live show at one of our great venues, or checking out an arts or cultural event.

6. Are you active in any organizations?

I make it a priority to serve my community where I can, including mentoring diverse law students and young attorneys. I'm a member of La Raza Lawyers of San Francisco and am an active liaison for the firm with the various La Raza student groups at Bay Area law schools. I'm also on the Board of Directors of Rising Sun Center for Opportunity, an organization that provides green job training and job placement support to low income and disadvantaged youth and adults.

7. What is your proudest accomplishment as an attorney?

I had a jury trial with my mentor where we obtained a complete defense verdict on all counts. I loved every part of the trial, from pretrial motions and voir dire, to cross-examination and opening/closing statements. It was the hardest I’ve ever worked in my career, but totally worth it because of the victory we got for the client.
