Dinsmore Partner and UK Alum Laura Holoubek to Teach Equine Law Course

January, 2020 - Louisville, Kentucky

Laura Holoubek, a partner at Dinsmore & Shohl LLP, will teach equine law at the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law this spring. Holoubek is a national authority on the subject and chairs Dinsmore’s Equine Industry and Gaming & Sports Industry groups.

Equine law accounts for about 80 percent of Holoubek’s work at Dinsmore, where she represents local, national and international clients in both the thoroughbred and sport horse industry, handling matters including acquisition and financing of racetracks, purchase and sales of racehorses, stallions and top sport horses, advice on USEF, FEI and IOC compliance, partnerships, syndications, USEF competition licensing and more. She also works with national and international gaming companies, advising them on state and federal regulatory matters.

“I’m so excited to teach this class again,” Holoubek said. “It’s an awesome way to give back and stay connected with the next generation of lawyers.”

The course, which Holoubek proposed and founded in 2007, will be available to second- and third-year students and will cover “all aspects of equine law,” including regulatory and gaming law, contract issues, liability issues, stallion syndication and more.

Dinsmore’s equine group has grown to nine attorneys in recent years, including Partner Kerry Irwin, who was a student under Holoubek. But horses are more than a profession for Holoubek, who grew up competing in eventing and show jumping, which she does to this day.

“Horses are my passion but also my career,” she said. “I continue to compete in the Adult Jumpers, and I’m fortunate my law practice keeps me involved in the horse sport and racing world on a daily basis.”

Holoubek also contributes her time and expertise to numerous community organizations, including Equestrian Events, Inc., New Vocations Racehorse Adoption, and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.
