Shoosmiths, RSM and RBC Brewin Dolphin help businesses “do good”

October, 2022 - Milton Keynes, England

A brand-new forum to support businesses across the North West to make a positive difference has been launched by three advisory firms: law firm Shoosmiths, accountancy and tax practice RSM and wealth manager RBC Brewin Dolphin.

'Business Doing Good' is an informal roundtable organised by the trio which aims to help businesses use the strengths of the charity sector to ‘effect positive change’ and to add ‘real value through ESG (Environment, Social and Governance)’.

Delegates are encouraged to share best practice, expertise and sector knowledge in a group discussion – with the aim of doing things even better.

The first event was hosted at The Prince’s Trust in Manchester and saw Shoosmiths, RSM and RBC Brewin Dolphin welcome representatives from national businesses, including Timpson Group alongside representatives from a number of locally based charities, including Preston-based Recycling Lives.

Shoosmiths’ principal associate Robert Nieri advises charities on their legal and regulatory obligations as well as businesses on their dealings with charities and in achieving social impact, including through the creation of charity foundations.

Robert said: “The idea for the roundtables came from discussions between our three organisations, all of whom are active within business and charity communities throughout the North West and nationally. We want to help them all add value.

“The purpose of the forum is to share insights and experiences and to promote a group discussion about making a real difference as well as operating in a smarter, more sustainable way, and to provide a platform for exploring future collaboration.”

Anna Lowe, legal director in the property team at Shoosmiths said: “We want to help businesses effect meaningful positive change – and not just tick the ESG box.”

John Guest, audit partner at RSM, said: “We are seeing an increasing number of organisations looking to further their activity in this area. Historically, for many, corporate responsibility has focused on traditional fundraising, however, whilst these income streams are incredibly important to charities and third sector organisations, there are many other ways for individuals and organisations to ‘give something back’.”

Bradley Russell, senior investment manager at RBC Brewin Dolphin, added: “Our clients ask how they could do more, and now we have a forum to inspire and help them to think bigger.”

The forum will run on a quarterly basis. Any businesses that would like to learn more would be welcome to join future roundtables should reach out to one of the three organisations for more information.
