Carey Olsen recognised as a leading offshore law firm for FinTech in Chambers 2023

In Jersey, Carey Olsen was ranked Band 1, the only firm to achieve a top tier ranking in Jersey, with partner Chris Griffin being recognised as a leading lawyer in Jersey.

Carey Olsen was also ranked Band 2 in the Cayman Islands, a leading offshore jurisdiction for FinTech, and counsel Chris Duncan was recognised in Band 2 for his expertise in the sector. Bermuda partner Steven Rees-Davies was also recognised in Band 2 for his expertise in the FinTech sector while the firm's Bermuda practice entered the ranking for the first time in Band 3. The firm's British Virgin Island (BVI) FinTech practice also entered the ranking for the first time in Band 3 meaning that Carey Olsen is one of only 3 offshore firms operating a FinTech practice in all 4 jurisdictions of Bermuda, BVI, Cayman Islands and Jersey.

Carey Olsen's FinTech practice have advised on some of the largest deals using offshore structures over the past 12-18 months, including advising FinTech Asia Ltd., on a transaction using a SPAC to acquire businesses in the FinTech sector that offer innovative solutions that improve the delivery of financial services in Asia.

The firm's FinTech practice also notably worked on a number of FinTech and crypto projects, including:

  • The launch of Altis Partners' and Blockchain.com's crypto multi-strategy fund platform BCAM, and a number of crypto funds for Singapore managers (for whom Jersey has become the jurisdiction of choice in this space)
  • Assisting Radix, the DeFi protocol, on its Olympia Mainnet launch
  • Advising Geopagos on US$35m funding round allowing the business to accelerate its Latin American expansion and invest in its technological offering, including the development of new digital payment methods
  • Establishing various Cayman foundation companies and decentralised autonomous organisations or DAOs, including the StarkNet Foundation formed to support the StarkNet protocol
  • Supporting African crypto start-up Jambo on its US$30m funding round
  • Obtaining regulatory approval for centralised exchanges and OTC desks facilitating crypto to fiat exchange
  • The establishment of a Jersey operation for an international online payments platform
