SyCipLaw and SBWDFI hold successful Kapihan on Labor and Immigration Law

SyCipLaw's Subic Office and Employment & Immigration Department (EID), in partnership with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and the Subic Bay Workforce Development Foundation, Inc. (SBWDFI), held the "Kapihan with SyCip in Subic: Updates on Labor and Immigration Law" last June 30 at the Subic Bay Travelers Hotel and Event Center. Representatives from around 60 companies attended the whole-day session, which featured lectures by SyCipLaw lawyers.

SBMA Labor Department Manager Severo C. Pastor, Jr. opened the session, followed by welcome remarks from Luisito V. Liban, who heads the firm's Employment and Immigration Department. Senior associates John Paul V. de Leon and Ruben P. Acebedo II provided an overview on the salient points of the Data Privacy Act and practical steps that companies should consider. Partner Leslie C. Dy walked participants through compliance to general labor standards, occupational safety and health hazards, and labor inspection. Partner Marianne M. Miguel provided a guide to employment termination in the Philippines and how to avoid post-termination issues.

In the afternoon, a panel composed of partners Rodelle B. Bolante and Russel L. Rodriguez, associate Il Young Choi, and foreign apprentice Masao Dan addressed potential conflicts between expatriates and employees by providing cultural contexts and practical advice on working with Filipinos, Koreans and Japanese.

A networking break featuring the lecturers, as well as partner Amer Hussein N. Mambuay and Subic Office senior associate Rosevee R. Paylip-Guiang, followed.
