Texas Appellate Bar “Dean” Mike Hatchell Joins Haynes and Boone

September, 2017 - Dallas, Texas

Mike Hatchell has joined Haynes and Boone, LLP as counsel in the firm’s highly regarded Appellate Practice. Chambers USA 2017 (Chambers & Partners) recently described Hatchell as the “dean of Texas appellate practice.”

“Mike is widely considered one of the leaders of the Texas appellate bar, and we could not be more pleased and honored to have him join our appellate team,” said Haynes and Boone Partner Nina Cortell, who like Hatchell is a recipient of the Greg Coleman Outstanding Appellate Lawyer Award from the Texas Bar Foundation. “Mike’s experience and extraordinary track record in the Texas Supreme Court will be a tremendous asset to the firm and to our clients.”

Hatchell has been lead counsel in more than 400 appeals, handling cases in all 14 courts of appeals in Texas and in federal courts across the country. He has argued 47 cases to the Texas Supreme Court and has been counsel in 104 Texas Supreme Court cases that resulted in opinions — 97 of those decisions resulted in some favorable relief for his clients.

“I’ve observed that as Haynes and Boone has grown from a Texas firm to a national firm and then an international firm, it has consciously maintained, advanced, and promoted its appellate group as one of its core practices. As a consequence, it has attracted and retained a wide and deep bench of appellate practitioners that have, with deliberation and purpose, honed their skills to achieve maximum results for clients,” said Hatchell, a member of the prestigious Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee and the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. “I’m honored to be a part of a group so devoted to excellence in appellate advocacy.”

Described as “a superbly talented appellate bench widely seen as the most accomplished in Texas” (Chambers USA 2017, Chambers & Partners), Haynes and Boone’s nationally-recognized Appellate Practice Group routinely tackles cutting-edge issues in high-stakes cases. The firm’s cases have set precedent in all areas of civil litigation, including commercial disputes, business torts, intellectual property, products liability, energy, and financial services. With 19 full-time appellate lawyers practicing in Texas, California, Colorado and New York, Haynes and Boone has one of the largest full-time appellate teams of any national law firm.

“Like so many other lawyers at the firm and in the appellate bar, I have long been an admirer of Mike’s consummate skill as a writer, oral advocate, and defender of his clients’ interests,” said Haynes and Boone Partner Lynne Liberato, a former president of the State Bar of Texas and former chair of the bar’s Appellate Section. “Mike will make our strong Appellate Practice Group that much stronger.”

Hatchell joins the firm from Locke Lord LLP, where he led the firm’s Appellate Practice Group. He will be based in Haynes and Boone’s Austin office.
