Metropolitan region Hamburg establishes express cycling network with Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek

January, 2018 - Duesseldorf, Germany

The metropolitan region of Hamburg has started planning for an express cycling network. A total of nine “corridors” will be used to create four-meter-wide cycle paths from Hamburg to Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, linking the Hanseatic cities of Hamburg, Lüneburg, Lübeck, Wismar, and many other surrounding municipalities and districts. The Hamburg metropolitan region hired procurement law experts Dr. Martin Schellenberg and Dr. Hilka Frese from the law firm of Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek for the invitation to bid for the relevant planning services.

Some 500,000 commuters travel through the Hamburg metropolitan region daily, regularly pushing its roads and public transportation system to their limits during peak hours. About 10,000 hours of congestion are recorded annually in front of and behind the Elbe tunnel and other access roads. The boom in electric bikes makes even longer distances more attractive to commuters. By expanding the cycle network, the metropolitan region hopes to improve its traffic situation in the long run.
