Karanović & Nikolić: Managing Emotions in Labour Disputes – More than Law
On 21 March, Karanović & Nikolić held its traditional student workshop titled “Managing Emotions in Labour Disputes – More than Law”. The event was organised in cooperation with the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Law.
Attorneys at law in cooperation with Karanović & Nikolić, Andrej Jelenković and Valentina Đorđić – members of the Dispute Resolution practice group, guided the students through the workshop. With an interesting case study of an employee of a famous fashion brand that illegally appropriated merchandise from company boutiques, the students were introduced to various characteristics of labour and commercial disputes.
Through interactive exercises, the attendees were acquainted with the organisation of the Serbian courts, the structure and duration of disputes, the impact that evidence from civil disputes has on criminal proceedings and vice versa.
The central theme of the workshop included the emotional aspects of disputes. In relation to that, students were given examples of various labour disputes in which people not only react emotionally, but in which emotions are the chief motivator for entering into procedures that are ambiguous in the legal sense. The lecture also included examples and guidelines as to how a lawyer should properly handle such cases, as well as extreme situations in which people cry during proceedings, behave aggressively and even attack witnesses.
