Oversight in the New Congress: A Primer on Congressional Inquiries and a Preview of Democratic Priorities

When

Tuesday, February 9, 2021
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. CST

As Democrats assume control this year of both houses of Congress and the executive branch, companies can expect a significant increase in congressional and regulatory scrutiny. Congressional oversight of the private sector typically increases when Democrats are in charge, especially during Democratic administrations. Democratic committee chairs will use oversight inquiries and hearings to focus attention on the COVID-19 crisis, as well as the full array of issues central to the Democratic congressional agenda.

Congressional inquiries present unique challenges with strategic considerations that differ from other government investigations or civil litigation. In a webinar on February 9, Bradley Partner Michael Gordon will provide an introduction to congressional oversight, including:

  • Congress' investigatory tools and powers
  • The rules governing congressional oversight
  • Defenses and rights of subjects of congressional investigations
  • Strategic and practical considerations for recipients of congressional letters and subpoenas
  • Likely oversight priorities in the new Congress
