Overview
Although California serves as an incubator for trends within the United States and across the globe, its rigorous regulatory climate can be especially challenging for businesses. Relying on our thorough knowledge of California-specific and federal regulations, we deftly assist companies in navigating the ever-changing demands on industry doing business in California.
Our California offices provide a full range of services in the areas of complex litigation, environmental health and safety law, energy and infrastructure, labor and employment, and real estate transactions for Fortune 100 and other major companies in California and around the world. We advise companies in a broad range of industries including oil and gas, financial services, retail and consumer products, technology, energy, and real estate investment and finance.
Our cross-disciplinary litigators have handled significant business and class action consumer claims ranging from toxic tort to strict liability, negligence and deceptive trade practices for major technology companies, consumer product manufacturers, financial institutions, and pharmaceutical companies. We have also guided clients through distressed transactions, distressed debt and claims trading, collection and workouts, bankruptcy, creditors’ rights, receivership, and commercial litigation.
In the area of environment, health, and safety law, our practice covers the full range of state, local and federal environmental and safety laws applicable to California operations and to products sold in California. We work with chemical, oil and gas, food processing, energy, pipeline, cement, mining and manufacturing industries; utilities; trade associations; retail and consumer products companies; and municipalities.
Hunton Andrews Kurth’s energy and infrastructure team in California focuses on project finance, corporate finance, and mergers and acquisitions. Consistently recognized by Chambers and other legal and industry publications as one of the top law firms for renewable energy transactions, the team assists clients with the development, financing and acquisition or sale of energy projects, and related transactions, including corporate clean power initiatives.
Our California labor and employment lawyers help employers maneuver through the special challenges created by California law, offering experienced, efficient, and strategic representation in virtually all areas of labor and employment law. We are among a small number of lawyers in the country to successfully try complex representative proof class and collective actions to jury verdicts.
In matters of real estate, our California lawyers have substantial experience in representing owners and investors in all aspects of acquiring, leasing, financing and developing office, retail and industrial property. Our experience includes developing industrial and commercial projects on Tribal lands, including advising on issues associated with compliance, construction, Tribal sovereign immunity and Tribal governance.
Our California offices are as dynamic as the cities where they reside. Both offices are led by women—Ann Marie Mortimer in Los Angeles and Shannon S. Broome in San Francisco—both recently named among the Top Women Lawyers in California by the Daily Journal. We are active in significant pro bono work and our dedication to the community extends to our involvement in local service projects. We want to contribute to the fabric of our community and be a long-term partner in improving the lives of our neighbors.
The Los Angeles office participates in the food drive for the Hollywood Sunset Free Clinic during Thanksgiving season, Robert Half’s annual suit drive for low income job seekers, the “Giving Tree” program for disadvantaged kids with Para Los Niños and volunteers with Midnight Mission to help alleviate homelessness.
