Is one job enough for the younger workers in the UK?

March, 2023 - Shoosmiths LLP

With the cost of living continually rising, more and more workers are looking at how they can generate extra income. It appears that Gen Z (those born from 1997 onwards) workers are one of the majority generations pursuing a side hustle alongside their full time job. But is the extra work being carried out by these workers due to necessity?

Commentary suggests that young workers want a fulfilling career and they do not feel like they are able to achieve that with just one job. Employees undertaking more than one job isn’t a new concept. Previously it happened because employees needed the additional money to survive, whereas now side hustles are becoming more attractive as a means of pursuing a passion while earning additional money.

Some employers may be wary of the additional work, particularly if it could pose a risk to the reputation of the company or involve working with a competitor. However, coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, a large percentage of employers have shifted their mindsets and are now open to employees working flexibly and in a hybrid fashion. Some employers view side hustles as a positive thing and it could benefit employers if an employee learns new skills from undertaking additional work, upskilling. Employers who support side hustles will also likely win the loyalty of those undertaking the additional work (particularly the younger workers) and it will likely foster an inclusive workplace culture helping these employees be their true selves at work. Employers should be mindful of employees burning out due to working too much and should check in regularly with those employees with second jobs or additional workstreams.
